How to choose a dog name
A great name is easy to say, easy for your dog to recognize, and something you'll still love in ten years. Keep these tips in mind:
- Stick to one or two syllables. Short names like Max or Luna are easier for dogs to pick up and quicker to call out.
- Avoid names that sound like commands. "Kit" sounds a lot like "sit," and "Bo" can blur into "no."
- Try a strong consonant sound. Names with hard sounds (K, T, D, B) tend to cut through background noise and grab your dog's attention.
- Do the park test. Say it out loud as if you're calling your dog across a busy park. If it feels awkward, keep looking.
- Think long term. "Tiny" is adorable on a puppy, but maybe less so on a 90-pound adult Great Dane. (Then again, maybe that's the joke.)
- Watch their reaction. Try a few favorites for a day or two and see which one your dog responds to.

Dog name FAQs
What are the most popular dog names?
Names like Luna, Bella, Max, Charlie, Cooper, and Daisy consistently rank near the top of popular dog name lists. If you want something that stands out at the dog park, try a less common pick from the personality or food lists above.
How long does it take a dog to learn its name?
Most dogs start responding to a new name within a few days to two weeks. Say it in a happy tone and reward them with a treat or praise every time they look at you.
Can you change an adopted dog's name?
Yes. Dogs of any age can learn a new name with consistent, positive practice. Some owners pick a new name that sounds similar to the old one to make the switch easier.
Should a dog's name end in a vowel?
It helps. Names ending in a vowel sound, like Milo, Bella, or Coco, are easy to say in an upbeat, sing-song voice that dogs tend to respond to.
What's a good name for two dogs?
Pairs are fun: Salt and Pepper, Peanut and Butter, Bonnie and Clyde, Mac and Cheese, or Lilo and Stitch. Just make sure the names don't sound too alike, so each dog knows who you're calling.
