How to Keep Your Dog Cool in the Summer
Summer is one of the best seasons to spend with your dog but the heat can be dangerous if you're not careful. Dogs don't sweat the same way we do and can overheat quickly, especially on hot and humid days.
Here's everything you need to know to keep your pup safe, comfortable, and cool all season.
1. Always Have Fresh Water Available
This one sounds obvious but it's the most important. Dogs need constant access to fresh cold water in the summer, especially after walks, playtime, or any time spent outside.
Bring a water bottle with you and never assume water will be available where you're going.
2. Avoid the Hottest Parts of the Day
The pavement gets blazing hot in the middle of the day and can burn your dog's paws in seconds. If you can't hold the back of your hand on the ground for 5 seconds, it's too hot for your dog to walk on.
Walk early in the morning or in the evening when it's cooler out. Your dog will thank you.
3. Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car
A parked car can reach dangerous temperatures within minutes even on a mild day. Never leave your dog alone in a parked car, not even with the windows cracked for a quick errand.
4. Find Shade and Grass
If you're spending time outside, keep your dog on grass rather than pavement and make sure there's shade available. A shady spot under a tree is significantly cooler than direct sun.
5. Know the Signs of Overheating
Every dog owner should know what heatstroke looks like:
- Excessive panting or drooling
- Bright red or pale gums
- Rapid heartbeat
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Lethargy or confusion
- Collapsing
If you notice any of these signs move your dog to a cool area immediately, offer water, apply cool (not cold) water to their paws and belly, and contact your vet right away.
6. Dress for the Weather
Keep any accessories lightweight and breathable. Our Dog Days of Summer Bandanas are made from lightweight moisture wicking fabric with UPF50+ sun protection so your pup can stay stylish without overheating. Perfect for morning walks, beach days, and backyard BBQs.
Summer with your dog is the best as long as you're keeping an eye on the heat. Fresh water, shaded walks, and early morning or evening outings go a long way toward keeping your pup safe and happy all summer.
Stay cool out there 🐾☀️
